What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient practice that encompasses physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the Self. It originated in India and was first codified by the sage Patanjali who wrote the Yoga Sutras around 400 CE. Yoga was originally handed down only by teacher to student before the Sutras were written. Since then Yoga has become popular throughout the World and many different forms and styles have developed. Although many newer styles of Yoga now exist, the basis of connecting the mind, body and soul with universal consciousness remains the same.
The word Yoga is rooted in the ancient language of Sanskrit. Sanskrit means “polished” or “perfected” and Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj which when translated into english means “to yoke” or “to unite”. Therefore by this definition in Yoga, we are uniting the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of ourselves. By doing this we are connecting to universal consciousness, allowing a deeper freedom of the Self, finding peace within and a Oneness with the universe.
Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years and includes many aspects such as asanas (postures), pranayama (breathwork), dhyana (meditation) or mantras (chanting). When practiced regularly and with intent, Yoga has the ability to neutralize the ego and can create a sense of spiritual awakening. The ultimate goal and final limb of Yoga is samadhi which means union with the divine or moksha (liberation).
